How to declutter your wardrobe

The goal is to open your wardrobe and see only the clothes you truly love—the ones that make you look and feel amazing! Decluttering your wardrobe is the key to achieving this. Not sure where to begin? Follow our step-by-step guide to get started:

  1. Gather all your clothes in the same place, and divide into categories and subcategories (i.e. Tops: t-shirts, jumpers, shirts).

  2. Starting with the off-season clothes, hold each item and ask yourself ‘do I love it’? Or if that is too vague try ‘do I get a positive feeling about it’ or ‘does this make me feel good’? If you feel completely neutral, leave it to the side and come back to it at the end. You may feel you are more ready to be brutal with your wardrobe decisions, or you may realise it fills an essential gap.

  3. Filter clothes through these key questions:
    - Did I wear it at all last season?
    - Does it fit well?
    - Would I want to wear it now?
    - If I was shopping today, would I buy it?
    - Is it currently in style or does it accurately represent my style?
    - Do I feel confident when I wear this?

  4. If the answer is no to any of the above, it might be time for it to go…

  5. If the item is damaged, assess whether it can be mended and importantly; whether you will likely bother to do it. If you love the item, but don’t think it will get fixed, make a note to replace it with something similar or consider getting the item replicated.

  6. Still finding yourself stuck with some items, run it through our final checklist:
    - Are you keeping it to wear or for the memories attached to it?
    - Do you like the item but are unsure how to style it or need other items to make it work? Spend a bit of time researching to see if you can make other items in your wardrobe work with it, or if you need to invest in something to complete the style.
    - If you don’t want to keep it but it makes you happy, consider taking a photo with it, or upcycling it into a cushion or home décor.
    - Is it the style or the colour that’s off? You might have been on the right track, but one element isn't quite working. Consider repurchasing a different colour or look into dying the garment.

  7. You have sorted, styled, removed and added… now look at how you are storing! Styling your wardrobe is almost as important as styling your outfit, so give thought to how you like to prepare for the day. Some like to store outfit items together, others like to store items in sections so they can mix and match, it all depends on how you piece together an outfit.

  8. Don’t forget, just because you no longer love a piece, it doesn’t mean someone else won’t! Give to friends, donate to charity, or list on Vinted/Depop/Ebay. One woman’s trash is another’s treasure!
